Expertise in Reproductive or Developmental Toxicology: Evaluation of animal and/or human reproductive or developmental health effects of chemical exposures

NATIONAL CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT

Brief description of Research Project: NCEA is responsible for scientific assessment activities related to the health effects of chemical pollutants in the IRIS (Integrated Risk Information System) program, as well as in the development of Integrated Science Assessments for the major air pollutants. These assessments provide key scientific support for EPA policy and regulatory decisions. These assessment activities are very broad and typically have significant implications for national and international environmental policy development and implementation. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with EPA scientists on cross-cutting scientific issues relevant to the development of human health assessments for the Integrated Risk Information System (see www.epa.gov/iris). Activities will particularly concern evaluation, analyses and integration of reproductive/developmental study findings or data to inform EPA’s health risk assessments and to improve health risk assessment methods. The participant will have opportunities to conduct quantitative or qualitative analyses, working with scientific staff in NCEA and potentially scientists from other EPA Labs, Centers or Offices, in the evaluation of reproductive/developmental evidence. Projects may include:

•Reviewing and evaluating data on reproductive/developmental health effects related to exposures to environmental chemicals.

•Developing analyses into logical, credible health assessment documents for NCEA that reflect current scientific principles and risk assessment methodologies. Daily activities may involve evaluation of study quality for reproductive/developmental toxicology studies, and identification of critical studies and effects for use in human health assessment, summarizing and extracting health effects study information and evaluation of concentration- or exposure-response relationships. The participant may learn how to synthesize and communicate various kinds of scientific information in health assessment.

•Identifying and researching cross-cutting scientific issues that arise in EPA risk assessment, such as application of methodologies and procedures for calculations.

•Devising scientific approaches for the NCEA’s risk assessment process, and interacting with EPA scientists to improve risk assessment methodologies. There is the potential for more than one selection to be made from this postdoctoral position announcement.

Educational requirements: PhD or equivalent in Reproductive or Developmental Toxicology or a related scientific discipline.

Specialized training and/or experience preferred: Previous experience with evaluating human and/or animal study data on reproductive or developmental effects of environmental pollutants (e.g., study quality).
