PBPK modeling: Tools and Applications for Human Health Risk Assessment

Brief description of Research Project: NCEA is responsible for scientific assessment activities related to the health effects of chemical pollutants in the IRIS (Integrated Risk Information System) program, as well as in the development of Integrated Science Assessments for the major air pollutants. These assessments provide key scientific support for EPA policy and regulatory decisions. These assessment activities are very broad and typically have significant implications for national and international environmental policy development and implementation. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with EPA scientists on cross-cutting scientific issues relevant to the development of human health assessments for the Integrated Risk Information System (see www.epa.gov/iris). The project will focus on implementing and evaluating model development and analysis tools for physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling, and applying these models in EPA’s IRIS health risk assessments. Activities will include:

•reviewing toxicokinetic data for use in PBPK modeling;

•developing models to calculate internal dose relevant to the interpretation and modeling of health effects associated with exposures to environmental chemicals

•developing methods for credible analyses of the uncertainty and sensitivity of model predictions;

•contributing to the development of emergent approaches to characterize variability of internal dose among exposed populations.

The participant will work closely with scientific staff in NCEA and potentially scientists from other EPA Labs, Centers or Offices. The post-doctoral position will enable the participant to gain an understanding of how PBPK models and scientific evidence are used to inform decisions in the development of EPA health assessments, and learn how to synthesize and communicate scientific information for this purpose. Educational requirements: PhD in applied mathematics, biostatistics, chemical or biochemical engineering, public health, pharmacology, or toxicology or a closely related field.

Specialized training and/or experience preferred: A strong focus on and experience in quantitative (computational) methods.
