The Division of Community Health Promotion, Florida Department of Health is seeking a full-time Epidemiologist with the Florida Birth Defects Registry.
The Florida Birth Defects Registry is a statewide population-based birth defects passive surveillance system that identifies birth defects in infants through age one born to Florida residents. Congenital anomalies was added to the list of reportable diseases/conditions on July 4, 1999.
The Florida Birth Defects Registry is part of the Surveillance and Registries Section which includes the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS), Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), and Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP). The Surveillance and Registries Section is part of the Public Health Research Unit which includes other epidemiologic programs, such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Florida Youth Surveys, and the Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Program. The Public Health Research Unit has been tasked with providing guidance and expertise to staff conducting research in the Department.
- Analyze Florida Birth Defects Registry Data to produce reports on counts and rates of specific birth defects by selected risk factors.
- Participate in investigations related to birth defects.
- Provide technical and consultative services in response to requests associated with birth defects from county health departments, citizens, and others.
- Program evaluation activities to improve program processes and outcomes related to birth defects reporting.
- Participate in meetings, trainings, and conferences related to the Florida Birth Defects Registry and other related maternal and child health issues.
- Participate in statewide planning and implementation of activities related to birth defects.
- Participate in medical record abstraction activities.
- Develop and review manuscripts for publication and presentations at regional and national conferences.
- Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will have an understanding of public health registries and surveillance systems, an understanding of maternal and child health, experience using SAS for data management of statistical analysis, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Educational background: MPH, MSPH, MS in epidemiology, or equivalent degree and two or more years of experience in Public Health or Epidemiology.
