Congratulations Dr. Vijaya Kancherla, recipient of the 2017 James G. Wilson Publication Award

kancherla head shot.jpgCongratulations to Vijaya Kancherla, PhD, for being awarded the James G. Wilson Publication Award. This award recognizes the best paper accepted or published in the journal Birth Defects Research. Dr. Kancherla will present highlights from the paper, “A 2015 global update on folic acid-preventable spina bifida and anencephaly” at this year’s Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, June 25 at 2:30 pm.

Dr. Kancherla points out that a disproportionately high number of preventable birth defects like spina bifida and anencephaly continue to occur worldwide, in spite of the knowledge of their prevention through folic acid supplementation. “We were excited and grateful when we received the news. It is indeed humbling to have been nominated and selected for the Wilson Publication Award,” said Dr. Kancherla. She believes this award has given her and her colleagues, “the recognition to advocate for prevention and improved data quality.”

Dr. Kancherla was introduced to the study of birth defects early in her doctoral program and instantly recognized the need and impact of this field.  “Being a teratologist is a meaningful career choice, and will make a difference in many lives,” she added.

This award is named in honor of one of the Teratology Society founders, James G. Wilson. Mrs. James G. Wilson is a tireless supporter of the Teratology Society and through the James G. Wilson Foundation has provided the generous resources for this prestigious award.
